Zanzibar

Just the name Zanzibar evokes feelings of romance and mystery.

Known as the Spice Island because of its export of cloves and other spices, Zanzibar is set like a jewel in tranquil, coral-filled water of the Indian Ocean. Only 20 minutes by plane or as little as 70 minutes by sea from Dar es Salaam, it is easy to get there. To its shores came Summarians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Portuguese, Arabs, Dutch and the British, each leaving behind a legacy of their stay.
 From the island the great European explorers - Speke, Livingstone, Burton, Krapf, Rebmann and Grant - set off for their voyages of discovery in the unchartered hinterland. Although everybody knows the island under the name Zanzibar, the official name is Unguja. Zanzibar is the name of the main town.

Stone Town


Zanzibar Town has a lot of interesting places to visit. The House of Wonders (once the palace of the former Sultan) is one of those places to see with its pillars, balconies and intricately carved doors. Close by is the old Arab Fort, noted for its orange stone walls and large courtyards. The old quarter of Zanzibar is known as Stone Town, and looks pretty much the same today as it did two centuries ago, with its winding lanes and Arabian style, stone houses.

Jozani Forest


This forest is the largest area of nature forest left on the island. It is now part of the Jozani-Chwaka Bay Conservation Area. The main attraction in this beautiful forest are the Red Colobus Monkeys. This is the only place in the world where this species is found, and there are only about 1500 of them left. They are highly social and live in groups of about thirty to fifty individuals. They are used to people and easy to see; you can approach them at a distance of 3 to 5 meters and you can watch them play, eat and socialize.

Zanzibar is the ideal place to relax for some days after your dusty safari or exhausting climb of the Kilimanjaro. Listen to the sounds of the waves on one of the beautiful white-sanded beaches on the island, with a clean sight of the sunset, take a spice-tour to learn all about the different spices you can find here, visit Jozani Forest and have a close look at the Red Colobus Monkeys, who are only found on this island or take a chance to swim with the friendly bottlenose dolphins.
