Serengeti National Park
One of the most unique wilderness areas of the world.
The Serengeti National Park, covering 14.763 square km. is one of the world's largest wildlife sanctuaries; fantastic in it's natural beauty and unequalled in its scientific value. One of the most breathtaking events in the animal kingdom, is the migration of thousands of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, buffaloes and other plain's animals. While grazing the ground, they are been followed by predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, hyenas and hunting dogs waiting for weak prey while vultures soar overhead waiting for their share of the kill.
The park's name Serengeti means 'endless plains' and is derived from the Maasai word Siringet. The park was gazetted in 1951 and is about 365 km from Arusha town. Serengeti's low vegetation means that game viewing is relatively easy, it varies from open grass plains in the south, Savannah with scattered acacia tress in the centre and hilly wooded grassland in the north, to extensive woodland and black clay plains to the west. There are many small rivers, lakes and swamps scattered about.

Survey estimates indicate an animal population of about 4 million, including over 3000 lions, 1.600.000 wildebeests, 500.000 zebras, over 400 bird species. Animals live in absolute freedom on endless plains, this makes it to be seen as the world greatest wildlife sanctuary. It is continuation of the smaller Maasai Mara in the North of Kenya Serengeti national park is boarded with highlands plateau of the Ngorongoro in the south, Lake Victoria in the west. The altitude varies between 1000 and 1900 metres above the sea level.
