Lemosho Route

7 - 8 days. Remote but very scenic route on Kilimanjaro.

An unspoilt, remote route across the beautiful Shira Plateau. This route is in fact an improvement of the older Shira Route. The main difference with Shira is the starting point. Where Shira will start at a high altitude (Shira Gate at 3600 m), the Lemosho Route starts at Londorossi Gate (2360 m), using a beautiful track through rain forest. It is recommended to allow 8 days so you will have more rest on the day before reaching the summit. However it is possible to do this route in 7 days by combining day 5 and day 6. You will sleep in tents, carried and set up by staff. Descent on Mweka Route. This itinerary will join the Machame route from day 4.

Please note that variations in route and/or camp sites are available.

  • Day 1: Arusha > Londorossi Gate > Mti Mkubwa Camp (2895 m)

After breakfast, briefing from the mountain guide. Then pack everything and drive to Londorossi gate. After registration start hiking to Mti Kubwa ('big tree') Camp through rain forest on a narrow wilderness trail with a good chance to see wildlife. Dinner and overnight stay at Mti Mkubwa Camp where we will set up our camp.

    Hiking time: 3-4 hours

  • Day 2: Mti Mkubwa > Shira Camp 1 (3480 m)

After breakfast, we start with an one hour trek to reach the end of the forest and then the trail gradually steepens and enters the giant heather moorland zone. Allow a lot of breaks on this day because of the steep trail. After lunch, the path flattens out, continuing to the edge of the Shira Plateau at 3612 m Kibo is straight ahead of you, the Shira Ridge to your right and you are overlooking the plateau below. From here we go downhill to Shira Camp 1 for dinner and overnight stay.

    Hiking time: 5-6 hours

  • Day 3: Shira Camp 1 > Shira Camp 2 (3830 m)

There are many different possibilities on day 3 with variations to the route and destination for overnight. We will head to Shira Camp 2, a gentle walk across the plateau on moorland meadows. The variety of available walks on the plateau make this an excellent acclimatization day.

Hiking time: 4 hours (optional routes available).

  • Day 4: Shira Camp 2 > Barranco Camp (3980 m)

After breakfast we start climbing up towards the Lava Tower, a 100 m/300 ft volcanic plug, left over from times when Kilimanjaro was volcanic. We will climbing up to 4600 m and your body will sure notice the the lack of oxygen!

After lunch near the Lava Tower we descend into the beautiful green Barranco Valley. You have great views across the plains below, offering great opportunities to take beautiful pictures.

The Barranco Camp is without a doubt the most spectacular campsite of this route, with fantastic views of Kibo, the Western Breach and the first of the southern glaciers.

You might have some symptoms of altitude sickness due to the height of Lava Tower, but by climbing high and sleeping low you had an important day for acclimatization. From this point all climbers from Machame, Umbwe and Lemoshi Route follow the same trail.

Hiking time: 4-5 hours ascent to Lava Tower, 2-3 hours descent to Barranco Camp

  • Day 5*: Barranco Camp > Karanga Camp (3995 m)

Wake up with stunning views from your tent at Barranco Camp. After breakfast we climb Barranco Wall. On the final ridge you are will have a breathtaking view of Kibo, which seems much closer by now! Continue to Karanga camp where we will have lunch. In the afternoon you can rest or take an additional acclimatization hike. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

    Hiking time: 4-5 hours

  • Day 6*: Karanga Camp > Barafu Camp (4670 m)

After breakfast we will head to Barafu Camp on an easy but steep path. On the left you will see the Southern Glaciers. We will arrive at Barafu around lunch time. After lunch you have enough time to prepare your equipment for the summit (check your camera batteries and headlight, we recommend to carry your water in a thermal flask to avoid freezing). Sleep early after dinner to rest as much as possible in order to get up at midnight for summit.

    Hiking time: 4-5 hours

  • Day 7: Barafu Camp > UHURU PEAK (5895 m) > Mweka Camp (3100 m)

We get up in the night to leave for Uhuru Peak around midnight, after some hot tea. Be prepared for a long, cold night & day. First we will reach Stella Point (5740 m), and after that we will reach the summit Uhuru Peak (5895 m) early in the morning. You are likely to experience the most beautiful sunrise of a lifetime.

After taking pictures and enjoying the moment at Uhuru Peak it's time to start the descent. It will take about 3 hours to go back to Barafu. After a short break we continue the descent to Mweka Camp, situated in the forest. Dinner and overnight stay at Mweka Camp.

Hiking time: 6-8 hours to Uhuru Peak, 5-6 hours descent to Mweka Camp

  • Day 8: Mweka Camp > Arusha

After breakfast start walking down to Mweka gate. You will pass the beautiful forest. At the gate you will receive your certificate for reaching the top (green certificate if you reached Stella Point, gold certificate if you made it all the way up to Uhuru Peak). After check out it's time say goodbye to your team and you will be picked up to drive back to the hotel in Arusha.

    Hiking time: 4-5 hours
